Essay On Cats And Dogs

Dogs Vs Cats

Introduction

Dogs and cats are by far the two animals most commonly kept as pets worldwide. Surveys indicate that some people are naturally disposed to either of the two as pets to the exclusion of the other animals. In other words, some people may be classified as ‘dog’ people while others are designated as ‘cat’ people. Simply put, some people love dogs but just can’t stand cats and vice versa. The jury is out as to which of the two makes a better pet. As in all cases of subjective debates, personal preferences inevitably influence perception but realistically, what are the objective facts?

The Case for Dogs

Several scientific research efforts have been conducted in the United States regarding the comparative attributes of dogs and cats as pets in order to determine which of the two makes a better pet. The results seem to be inconclusive with arguments both in favour of and against the two animals. What are the findings that favour domestic dogs as better pets than domestic cats? Research has revealed that dog owners have lower blood pressure, lower levels of cholesterol and are less prone to developing serious health issues. Dogs have been found to make people laugh unlike cats. Dogs help people to make friends. A recent survey shows that people are more likely to stop and chat with a person walking with his dog than one going alone.

A dog’s sense of smell can be put to a good use. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are currently training some specific breeds of dogs on how to detect ovarian cancer by sniffing. Dogs are more advanced technologically than cats. Dogs are easily trained to make use of gadgets such as iPads to take “selfies” and to respond to written commands on such gadgets. Dogs keep their owners fit by encouraging them to walk which is a great bodily exercise. Dogs are true heroes, being useful in crime fighting. They have been used to detect bombs and prevent multiple deaths of people. Dogs are known to be capable of detecting heart attacks 12 or 15 hours before it happens. They display tell-tale signs such as whining and anxious barking hours before the seizure strikes. Dogs have been proven countless times to be loyal creatures. Dogs have been known to be trained in helping to save endangered animal species such as killer whales. Studies reveal that children exposed to “dog dust” early in life are less prone to developing allergies or asthma later in life.

The Case for Cats

Generally speaking, cats are easy to please, make good roommates and are entertaining. Cats are naturally neat, clean and tidy. Cats hunt pets such as rats thereby reducing their potential health dangers. Cats are cheaper to keep than dogs and are very quiet. Cats do not need their owners in order to exercise themselves and are more flexible when it comes to the choice of a home.

This essay aims to present similar and opposite sides of cats and dogs keeping, feeding, and caring. It will compare and contrast all aspects of these animals as pets. Its goal is to help people understand whether cats or dogs suit their character and everyday routine as a pet.

Similarities between Cats and Dogs

Domestication

A human domesticated both cats and dogs hundred years ago. Thus, both cats and dogs are bred in captivity. They are easily trained for hygiene and primary owner’s orders and rules since early age. Consequently, if a person aims to teach a pet to pee, eat or sleep in the particular place, it will do it without problems after some training. Of course, young age is the best period for training pets.

Care

Besides regular daily feeding, both cats and dogs require frequent combing and washing, as only sphinx cats and dogs are furless. The other breeds have fur. It can be shorter or longer, but without proper care, fleas will settle not only in it but in the whole area around. Moreover, both species of animals cast their coat. Therefore, the owners should be ready to clean their living space carefully and regularly to keep it tidy.

Posterity

Both cats and dogs perfectly cope with nursing their offspring. Some particular breeds need assistance with the accouchement. The owners of the mongrel pets should not bother about their mating, but the high-bred pets require the search of same breed representatives for the thoroughbred posterity.

Differences between Cats and Dogs

Ties with the Owner

Dogs adore the company of their owner. They play during a day and sleep whole night as their owners do. Dogs love to be petted and can sit near the breeder hours long. Besides, they like to play, thus requiring more attention. Cats, on the contrary, can sleep daylong and walk at night. Some of them like petting but many live comfortably without much attention of the owner.

Emotionality

Dogs are much more emotional than cats. They bark, grown, whine, jump, and wag their tails to demonstrate their feelings. Cats mew, hiss, and purr but in rare situations, causing much less noise than dogs. Cats, as a rule, can spend a couple of days without the owner and feel quite comfortable, but dogs begin to miss their owner and be bored very quickly.

To conclude, both cats and dogs are good for keeping at home, but cats require much less attention and time of their owners and behave more like independent roommates while dogs strive for being a close friend and spend most of the time with their owners.
